What I take on
Full-stack product build
Taking a product from nothing to shipped - the web app, the API behind it, the database under that, and the deploy pipeline that puts it in front of people. I work end to end rather than handing off between specialists, which is usually what a small team actually needs.
Suits a founder with a clear idea and no engineering team yet, or a team that needs a second pair of hands on a discrete piece of product.
Fractional lead and advisory
Part-time engineering leadership: reviewing an architecture before it becomes expensive, sitting in on hiring, setting up the practices that keep a team shipping, and mentoring engineers who are growing into more senior work. This is the day job, sold by the day.
Suits a company with engineers but no senior engineering leader, or a founder who needs a technical judgement they can trust before committing to a direction.
How an engagement works
01
A short call
Half an hour on what you are trying to build and what is in the way. No charge, and no obligation on either side at the end of it.
02
A written scope
If it looks like a fit, I write down what I think the work is, what it excludes, and roughly how long it runs. You get that before any money is discussed.
03
A fixed shape
Then either a fixed-scope project with a defined end, or a retained arrangement for a set number of days a month. I do not take open-ended hourly work - it is bad for both of us.
Rates depend on the shape of the work, so they are a conversation rather than a price list. You will have a number in writing before you commit to anything.
Background
I have written software for about a decade, most of it in financial services - retail and internet banking products, and before that a performance reporting platform I designed and built inside a tier-1 Nigerian bank. More recently I spent two years on a US healthcare SaaS platform used by more than 8,000 care organisations across all fifty states.
I now manage a team of engineers at a financial institution. That is the experience the advisory work sells: I have had to make the calls about sequencing, hiring and technical debt with real money and real deadlines attached, not in the abstract.
Outside employment I build my own products through Softhrone - Efficlick is the current one - so the freelance work is not a side of my craft I keep in a cupboard. The full timeline is on the about page.
Currently taking enquiries
I keep one or two engagements running at a time, so availability moves. Tell me what you are building and I will tell you honestly whether I am the right person for it.
