About

An engineer who ended up leading engineers

I have written software for about a decade, most of it in financial services. These days I manage a team rather than write the bulk of the code myself, which is a different craft wearing similar clothes - the work is now about judgement, sequencing, and the health of the people doing the building.

My route in was unusual. I read mathematics, then went into software - and because the software was banking software, I went and studied the accounting properly, taking the ACCA Diploma in Accounting and Business rather than keep taking the domain on trust. In fintech, understanding what a balance sheet is doing is not a side skill.

Away from work I am building Efficlick, mentor software engineers early in their careers, and take photographs.

Work I would point at

A performance reporting platform

Tier-1 Nigerian bank

About 1,800 relationship managers each spent roughly an hour a day assembling performance spreadsheets by hand. I designed and built the platform that replaced that work - reporting, dashboards, credit monitoring, and budgeting - and it removed on the order of 468,000 hours of manual effort a year. It settled at around 1,900 unique users a week.

I built it outside the remit of the role I held at the time, which is the part I am actually proud of: nobody asked for it.

The company’s highest award, 2019

Selected from a staff of more than 7,000

Given for the reporting platform and for a budgeting application delivered in under two months, against an external quote of six months and roughly £155,000. Taken together the year’s work saved the organisation something over £780,000.
